This book is for beginners who want to add basic acrobatic moves to their martial arts. The book is easily organized and easy to read. Plus the tips are very helpful to better your moves and correct problems.
Book is set up as: Warm ups, kicks, tricks, and workout.
Warm ups and workout are very beneficial for any beginning and ending of a routine. Best thing is that it is clearly displayed with exercises to raise your blood flow and to condition your body. Plus upon the DVD you get a couple minutes of review on how to do the warm ups. The only thing is when starting out don't try to over push yourself with the workout. It can be taxing so start off slow and work your way up. Remember you don't want to be sore the next day.
Then the DVD goes into kicks. Just like with the warm up it shows a review of the basics kicks that are taught with the book. Once went the DVD moves upon the jumping kicks Matt begins to explain how to do the moves. Moves are shown from the front, and some moves from the side, at normal speed and in slow motion.
Majority of the tricks are either jumping or standing. Though all of them are classic, meaning a lot of people are trying to learn these moves. So this set has a lot of what you want to learn. If you are going to adopt these moves to your martial art arsenal then these are fine moves. Nothing is overly flashy. Many of these moves are needed to be known if you are to become a black belt (i.e. Tae Kwon Do). Plus if needed you could even tone them down a bit to settle nicely into your your art or style.
Worst thing about the DVD is that you can't watch the spots consecutively. Instead you have to click, watch, then scroll down and repeat. Then after you have watched the spot the cursors starts at the beginning once again. SO annoying if you are trying to watch the spots in the middle.
Best thing about the book/DVD set is that it is complete. The book is very informative and doesn't talk too much. It tells it like it is and that's it. The DVD is a great add on. It doesn't speak like the book but is an aid to it. It shows you so that you can get a better understanding of what you are learning from the book. Remember the book is teaching you not the DVD.
I give it a high score because it teaches all the basics and some intermediate moves to the basics:
Front kick, jump front kick,
round kick,
side kick,
hook kick, spin hook,
straight inside crescent kick, snap inside crescent kick,
straight outside crescent kick, snap outside crescent kick,
360 crescent,
axe kick,
jump split kick,
tornado kick,
hand stand,
batido, au batido, and variations,
cartwheel - one handed, two handed, and aerial,
and the kip.
Then maybe one day he'll come out with more intermediate and advance moves, like aerials.
Now if these moves aren't the ones you want to learn then this book/DVD set is not for you. |

Matt Mullins is a very talented martial artist who doesn't wast your time by dumbing things down. This book and DVD are very well put together. Matt doesn't waste time on explaining everything to death, and he doesn't need to-he provides a dvd, pictures and written and spoken word. This book is useful to any martial artist that is considering or currently doing Extreme Martial Arts at their school. This is a great level one starting book and could be used as a lesson plan for your extreme classes, because he so easily covers the important basics that will put some flash in your routine! This book is a must have! I'm anxiously waiting for the next level... |
